Park ONLY in the designated spaces and DO NOT double park. The Charlotte Table Tennis Club meets at First United Methodist Church in uptown Charlotte. We use the door on the north side of the church toward the back, between the small surface parking lot and the playground. We have partnered with the Charlotte Table Tennis Club and their 30 year presence in the community. When we met they were lacking a strong development program for their club members. Together we were able to succeed in meeting both our missions.

The skills test and cumulative exam will require a passing score to unlock the next educational level. Each education level has a corresponding training package. Players use the training service to help get a passing grade on the final examinations. A recreational ping-pong player's first visit to a competitive table tennis club can be daunting. There are youngsters whose shoulders barely clear the tabletop hitting forehand topspin balls at astonishing velocity and octogenarians whose skill with long pips rubber makes the ball seem to defy the laws of physics. Many of us grew up playing ping-pong in a basement or garage, with a recreational or even homemade table and hard rubber pips out paddles from Sears.
The Program
PARKINGPreferred parking is in the 525 N Tryon garage – the entrance is on 9th street. Park in any space that is not numbered or does not say Reserved. Bring the ticket in to validate at the scanner on the 2nd floor. Use the elevator that says Child Development Center and Church Offices. Go up to level ⭐️ P and follow the ping pong paddle signs. Tickets often need to be scanned twice – make sure you get the green message and not the red message after scanning.

However, it’s important to keep certain simple facts in mind before choosing to move up to the sport of table tennis as a serious club player. Table tennis is an extremely racket-sensitive sport and dependent not only on your own playing style but your opponent’s as well. Even many advanced players, let alone newcomers, have absolutely no clue whatsoever about the complexity of modern rackets. Our program for developing a player’s table tennis skill has three levels. Each level consists of four one-hour education sessions, and player progress is evaluated through four multiple choice quizzes, a skills test, and a cumulative multiple choice exam.

Traditionally, this is done by one player rolling the ball off the table into one hand or the other (hidden below the table) and the opponent “chooses” a hand. If the hidden hand with the ball is chosen then that player can choose to serve (what most players do) or choose which end of the table to play from (in which case that player does not get the initial serve). But the server can be chosen by flipping a coin, paper/scissors/rock, or however the two players decide to do it–it doesn’t matter.

For youth athletes that wish to continue with our training and direction, we provide three services. A match is generally played best 3 of 5 games (or occasionaly 4/7 or 5/9). For each game, the first player to reach 11 points wins that game.
All services for the level program are purchased through plans - either a complete education package or by one level at a time. We provide a training environment for them to practice their skill with qualified trainers. In the future we hope to reach out and establish a small presence in surrounding schools and recreation centers.
Detailed lesson plans and player progress tracking allow us to bring in more educators and trainers as needed. The levels give players defined goals that are attained by their own design and labor. They choose how much training between each education session. Each player, educator, and trainer knows where they are in a linear developmental program so progress from any starting point can be made quickly. There is no reason to quit coming to our club after just few days or weeks or even few months. Most serious club table tennis players understand how complex table tennis is and don’t think of you as any less of an athlete or a person even if you keep losing to most other club players for years to come. Most are more than willing to help you nonetheless, in every way possible to improve your skill level, regardless of whether you are an absolute beginner or even an advanced player. Even if you are not interested in spending lots of money on equipment, you can get a good “basic” setup for less than $100 that can last for years.
Or, many experienced players will have rackets they no longer use that they will let you try out and then if you like it will sell it to you for much less than the cost of a new racket and new rubbers. Table tennis skills and equipment (rubbers and rackets) are much more complex than the recreational meanderings of basement ping-pong. Table tennis is a sport of a billion unique individual styles (due to infinite combinations of standard and unorthodox grips, stroke execution mechanics and racket designs).
